How We Test
Our reviews are based on structured, repeatable analysis of product documentation, manufacturer specifications, and publicly available information — not casual impressions.
Our Evaluation Approach
Every product we review goes through a structured evaluation process built on publicly available information:
- Software tools: Evaluated against documented features, supported platforms, and published use cases.
- Peripherals (keyboards, mice, webcams): Analyzed based on manufacturer specifications, published performance data, and feature sets.
- Furniture (desks, chairs): Assessed using documented dimensions, weight capacity, adjustability ranges, and material specifications.
- Long-term monitoring: For products we cover, we revisit the review after 6 and 12 months to reflect manufacturer updates, new revisions, or specification changes.
Information Sources
Our evaluation is built on publicly available product information rather than hands-on testing. Primary sources include:
- Official manufacturer product pages and technical specification sheets
- Product documentation, user manuals, and published technical documentation
- Publicly listed dimensions, materials, weight capacities, and performance claims
- Manufacturer-published compatibility, connectivity, and feature information
- Documented use cases, supported workflows, and intended applications
Specification Analysis
Where a specification is published, we analyze it against competing products in the same category. We do not perform independent physical measurements. Here's what we analyze for each product category:
Standing Desks
- Stability: Manufacturer-published stability features, frame design, and leg configuration
- Noise level: Documented motor noise specifications where available
- Speed: Published height adjustment speed (inches per second)
- Weight capacity: Stated maximum load rating
- Height range: Published minimum and maximum height specifications
Ergonomic Chairs
- Adjustability: Count of independent adjustments documented (seat height, armrest, lumbar, tilt, seat depth)
- Lumbar support: Published lumbar support features and adjustability
- Breathability: Documented mesh material and back construction
- Build quality: Material specifications, frame construction, gas cylinder class
- Comfort features: Documented padding, contouring, and ergonomic certifications
Keyboards & Mice
- Switch specifications: Published actuation force (grams), switch type, and tactile characteristics
- Battery life: Manufacturer-rated battery life with and without backlight
- Latency: Published input lag and polling rate specifications for wireless models
- Ergonomics: Documented wrist angle design, ergonomic features, and supported hand sizes
- Connectivity: Documented wireless protocols, compatibility, and multi-device support
USB-C Docks
- Transfer speed: Published USB data transfer rates and supported protocols
- Charging speed: Documented power delivery (PD) wattage output
- Multi-monitor: Stated maximum display support, resolution, and refresh rate
- Thermal design: Documented thermal management features and cooling design
- Compatibility: Published compatibility with macOS, Windows, iPadOS, and other platforms
Webcams
- Image quality: Published resolution, sensor size, and lens specifications
- Low-light performance: Documented low-light sensitivity and sensor pixel size
- Color accuracy: Stated color depth, field of view, and color reproduction specs
- Autofocus: Documented autofocus type and tracking features
- Audio: Published microphone type, frequency response, and noise cancellation features
Comparative Specification Analysis
Every product is analyzed alongside at least two direct competitors in the same price tier. We don't evaluate products in isolation — we compare their documented specifications against what else is available for the same price.
For example, when we evaluate the FlexiSpot E7 standing desk, we compare its published specifications, height range, weight capacity, and warranty against the Vari Electric Desk and the Branch Standing Desk in the same price range.
Our Scoring System
How we calculate the overall score (out of 5)
Each product is scored on 5 weighted categories, calculated from documented specifications and feature analysis:
- Performance (30%): How well does it do its primary job based on published specs? For a desk: stability features, speed, noise rating. For a chair: adjustability, support features, ergonomic design.
- Build Quality (25%): Materials, construction, expected durability based on documentation, warranty length.
- Value (20%): Price relative to competitors with similar specifications. A $300 desk that matches the specs of a $500 desk scores high here.
- Ergonomics (15%): Based on documented ergonomic features and manufacturer-rated adjustability. Does it support healthy posture per published specifications?
- Features (10%): Programmable presets, connectivity, adjustability — the extras that matter.
The overall score is a weighted average. We also give an "Editor's Choice" badge to products that score 4.5 or above and offer exceptional value.
Review Process
Every review goes through this pipeline before publication:
- Product selection: We choose products based on reader interest, market relevance, and price tier coverage.
- Documentation gathering: We collect official manufacturer specs, product documentation, and published technical information.
- Feature analysis: We assess features against the product's intended use case and target workflow.
- Specification comparison: We compare specifications against 2+ direct competitors in the same price tier.
- Pricing research: We verify current pricing, warranty terms, and availability across retailers.
- Workflow assessment: We evaluate how the product fits into real-world home office and professional workflows based on published capabilities.
- Scoring: Weighted scoring across 5 categories, calculated from documented specifications and feature analysis.
- Draft writing: The primary author writes the review draft based on the gathered documentation and analysis.
- Editorial review: A senior editor reviews for accuracy, fairness, and clarity.
- Fact-check: All specs, prices, and claims are verified against manufacturer data and published information.
- Publication: Review is published with the author's byline and a link to their author page.
- Long-term monitoring: We revisit after 6 and 12 months. If the product is updated or replaced, we update the review accordingly.
Editorial Independence
Our evaluation process is completely independent of our affiliate partnerships. The affiliate team does not see reviews before publication. The review team does not know which products have higher commission rates. See our Editorial Policy for the full independence rules.
